Love in To His Coy Mistress, Shall I Compare Thee, Let Me Not, and The Flea The four poems I am going to be comparing are, ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistress,â⬠ââ¬Å"Shall I Compare Thee,â⬠ââ¬Å"Let Me Not,â⬠and ââ¬Å"The Flea.â⬠All four of these poems are based on the subject matter of love. The four poems have a lot in common but each poem touches a different aspect of love. Two of the poems, ââ¬Å"Shall I Compare Theeâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Let Me Notâ⬠, are sonnets and both were written by Shakespeare. ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠is written by Andrew Marvell and ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠was written by John Donne. All four of the poems have three parts to them each posing a different argument. I will be analysing and comparing the four poems in the purpose of the poem, the nature ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Shakespeare is praising his mistress when he says she is ââ¬Ëbetter than the bestââ¬â¢ because summer is the best time of the year and Shakespeare is saying she is better than summer. ââ¬Å"Thou art more lovely and more temperateâ⬠shows that he is saying she is perfect and constantly exquisiteâ⬠. The word ââ¬Å"darlingâ⬠gives the poem an affectionate tone. Shakespeare is also writing to show off his writing skills, this is shown in the last line when he says, ââ¬Å"So long lives this and this gives live to theeâ⬠, because he says his writing will live on forever. It is also written to give his loved one a reminder of mortality. ââ¬Å"Nor shall death bragâ⬠is the reminder of death and it is personified because it implies death canââ¬â¢t take her. The purposes of ââ¬ËLet Me Notââ¬â¢ were to flatter Shakespeareââ¬â¢s loved one, remind his beloved of mortality, define love and to show how love is threatened by other things. Romantic flattery is shown when Shakespeare says, ââ¬Å"rosie lips and cheeksâ⬠, it is also describing his beloved. The reminder of death is shown when the poem says, ââ¬Å"edge of doomeâ⬠; this is even more effective than just death because it is describing love until the end of the world. The ââ¬Å"edge of doomeâ⬠also defines love and pontificates it to the end of time. ââ¬ËLet Me Notââ¬â¢ is an imperative because it is a strongShow MoreRelated Look again at the three seventeenth century poems, To His Coy Mistress,1589 Words à |à 7 PagesLook again at the three seventeenth century poems, To His Coy Mistress, The Flea, and Shall I compare thee. A peaceful woman explains why she carries a gun free essay sample
Now days world is not safe. According to the CDC, ââ¬Å"non-contact unwanted sexual experiencesâ⬠are the most prevalent form of sexual violence in the Unites States. Every 2 minutes, someone in the U. S. is sexually assaulted. According to the online studies by Stop Street Harassment, 99% of respondents said that they had been harassed at least a few times. ââ¬Å"A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gunâ⬠by Linda Hasselstrom exemplifies a use of having a gun for protection as a last resort. Hasselstrom was justified for her need to own a gun as she wanted to be protected, safe and have a peace of mind. Desire to be protected justified Hasselstrom to get a gun; however, she considered other means of protection first. To begin with, Hasselstrom used improvised means for protection. For example, she had her own ââ¬Å"gunâ⬠(spray cans of deodorant) which did not have to be registered. We will write a custom essay sample on A peaceful woman explains why she carries a gun or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, one night while camping, the author and her friend, harassed by two young men, decided not to tempt fate and use their ââ¬Å"improvised maceâ⬠, but simply leave the camping area. When improvised means of protection did not work, Hasselstrom considered another option- a citizens band radio, a system of short-distance radio communications between individuals which does not require a license. However, she rejected this method of protection providing an example of a woman who got beaten and raped using a CB radio to get help with a flat tire. The last method Hasselstrom considered as a mean of protection was self-defense. For her, kung fu class was a smart decision because on the top of her self-preservation, her height and weight did not give her any benefit. Therefore, looking for protection, Hasselstrom provided the readers with justified steps she took prior to the extreme measure of protection- a gun. Also, the author was well-grounded for her need of a gun because she wanted safety. Firstly, she did not feel safe on her land. While Hasselstrom lived on a ranch in secluded area 25 miles from the nearest town, she, somehow, managed to have uninvited guests on her property. For example, one day she noticed an armed man on her land who wanted to shoot ducks. As a result, she could not feel safe even on her territory. Secondly, as the author was vulnerable even while driving her car, her possession of a gun was reasonable. Hasselstrom provides the readers with examples to prove her right. In one of the examples, an unknown car was following her on her way home, and made her stop by flashing a blinding spotlight in her face. Another example depicts a man who was playing cat-and-mouse with Hasselstrom within 30 miles when she was driving in a desolate part of Wyoming. Thirdly, the fact that Hasselstrom did not feel safe even in public places justified her to own a gun. She provided an example of her and her friend being harassed and scared by men while camping in the West. Moreover, looking for some help from the local rangers, she had to face with their carelessness and unwillingness to protect and help. In addition to Hasselstromââ¬â¢s desire of protection and safety, there is a desire of peace she was looking for which justified her to possess a weapon. First of all, she could not get a peace of mind being harassed on a daily basis. Whether she was among people or on her property, she faced acts of harassment or danger which took her further away from a peace she was searching for. Then, she could not find a peace of mind if she was constantly stressed out, suspicious and scared about everything. One day the author found deep tire ruts in her yard and garbage in her driveway. More likely, that fact would lead a person like her to suspect that someone unfriendly had an intention to hurt or do her harm. Third of all, Hasselstrom lived in the environment where women did not stand much for a chance of not being harassed. Men in her area worried her, and their harassment would not stop until stronger measures were taken. However, Hasselstrom did not want to be either daily harassed, be another victim of rape or permanently stressed out and scared. Threfore, she believed that having a gun handy would lead her to a peace of mind she was looking for. In conclusion, relying on Hasselstromââ¬â¢s examples provided in the article, she was justified for her need to own a gun. She had no choice but to use it in dangerous situations to protect herself. When used responsibly, women in the same situation as the author would live protected, safe and with peace of mind they desire. What Hasselstromââ¬â¢s message was in this article is that no one, man or woman, should live in fear. And in her situation, owning a gun gave her that security.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo`s Nest Essays (1377 words) - Nurse Ratched
One Flew Over The Cuckoo`s Nest What is reality? The novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Kesey, explores living in a mental institution through the mind of a patient. As the reader begins the novel, they would naturally think that a patient found in a mental hospital would be insane. As Kesey introduces you to the patients, and you see the institution in their eyes, you believe that they are really normal people, and society is insane. The main character, Chief Bromden is a half Indian man, who is considered schizophrenic. Randall McMurray, the newest patient in the ward, causes many difficult situations for the Nurse. Nurse Ratched is the authority figure for the patients and likes everything to be run her way. A man who is known as Chief Bromden, the main character, starts as seeming to be a shy, weak man. This is shown in the first chapter on page three, when a caretaker of the institution talks of him while he is present, "Big enough to eat apples off my head an' he mine me like a baby." Chief Bromden is in the hospital because he is schizophrenic, and is considered deaf and dumb, because he never talks or acknowledges people. At the end of the novel, McMurray becomes a vegetable because of all of the shock treatments he had received. Bromden displays that he is caring by smothering him with a pillow, because he knows that McMurray would not want to live like that. One of the reasons that people find him shy is that he would much rather be quiet, and observe his surroundings. Page 26-27 (Bromden thinking of Nurse Ratched) "I've watched her get more skillful over the years. Practice has steadied and strengthened. her until she wields a sure power that extends in all directions on hair-like wires, too small for anybody's eye but mine; I see her sit in the center of this web of wires like a watchful robot, tend her network with mechanical skill, know every second which wire runs where and just what current to send up to get the results she wants" Chief Bromden is the smartest, most caring and gentle man in this novel. He is the kind of guy that many people would like to know, and associate themselves with. The Chief stands out from the rest of the men of the ward. Physically, he stands out by being half Indian, with long, black oily hair. Also, he is a very large man, standing 6'7" and having a very muscular build, from playing football when he was a teenager. He stands out mentally by being a "chronic." "Across the room are the culls of the Combine's product - the chromic. Not in the hospital, these, to get fixed, but just to keep them from walking around the streets giving the product a bad name. Chronics are in for good, the staff concedes. Chronics are divided into Walkers, like me, and the Wheelers. What the chronic are, are machines with flaws inside that can't be repaired." The Chief thinks of the outside world to be a "Combine," which is used throughout the novel. The chief is very different from the men living in the hospital alongside him. Randle Patrick McMurray is the newest addition to the ward. He is compared with two people throughout the novel. His physical traits are compared with that of Paul Bunyan's. McMurray is red headed, has long red side burns and curly hair. He has a broad chest and jaw and has a distinct red scar that runs along his nose and cheekbone. Another prominent feature of his, is a tattoo on his left hand of an anchor. McMurray's large, beat-up hands and tanned body are a result of many years working on a farm, P. 12, "His face and neck and arms are the color of ox blood leather." He is the most recent addition to the ward, and one of the reasons he was placed there was because he is obsessed with sex and committed statutory rape with a 15-year-old girl. The second person they compare McMurray to is Christ. He goes through a kind of crucifixion when he begins a series of electric shock treatments. When the attendant places salve on his temples, McMurray says, P 270, "Anointest my head with conductant. Do I get a crown of thorns?" Randall McMurray's role is obvious in the world, described to be a cross between Paul Bunyan and Christ. McMurray's personality is very
